Storage & Make-Ahead Tips:

Store the trail mix in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week for the best crunch. You can make it several days ahead, making it a great option for parties and road trips.

For grab-and-go snacks, portion the mixture into individual zip-top bags or reusable snack containers.

Variations & Substitutions:

Swap the chocolate chips for white chocolate chips, mini chocolate chips, or a combination of chocolate and peanut butter chips. You can also substitute raisins or dried cherries for the Craisins, pecans or cashews for the almonds, or toasted coconut for regular coconut flakes.

For an extra-special version, drizzle the finished mix with a little melted white chocolate, spread it on parchment paper to set, and then break it into snackable clusters.

FAQs:

How do I keep the cereal from getting stale?
Make sure your container is tightly sealed and keep the trail mix away from heat and humidity. Avoid refrigerating it, since moisture can soften the cereal.

Can I use mini chocolate chips instead of regular chocolate chips?
Absolutely! Mini chocolate chips actually distribute more evenly throughout the mix, so you get a little chocolate in almost every handful.

Can I make this trail mix nut-free?
Yes. Leave out the almonds and add extra cereal, Craisins, coconut, or sunflower seeds. If you're making it for school, be sure to check the labels on all ingredients for allergy warnings.

How can I keep the smaller ingredients from sinking to the bottom?
Give the container a gentle shake or stir before portioning. Using chopped almonds instead of whole almonds can also make the ingredients more similar in size.

Can I use unsweetened coconut instead of sweetened coconut?
Yes! Unsweetened coconut is a great choice if you'd like to tone down the sweetness since the cereals, Craisins, and chocolate already add plenty of sweet flavor.

Notes

Helpful Tips

For the best texture, use roasted and lightly salted almonds and sunflower seeds. The little bit of salt balances all those sweet ingredients beautifully. I also recommend adding the chocolate chips last so they don't settle at the bottom of the bowl quite as quickly.
Because Rice Krispies are smaller than the other ingredients, give the container a gentle shake before serving to redistribute everything.
