Instructions:

1. Prepare the oven and dough.

Preheat oven to 375°F. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. Unroll the crescent dough, press the seams together, and cut into approximately ¼-inch-wide strips.

crescent rolls cut into strips.

2. Wrap the mummies.

Pat the sausages dry. Place a thin strip of cheddar against each sausage and wrap with crescent dough strips, overlapping slightly to resemble mummy bandages. Leave a small opening near one end for the eyes. I had my daughter help me. We had so much fun wrapping up these little guys.

3. Bake until golden.

Arrange mummies seam-side down, about 1 inch apart. Bake for 12–15 minutes, until the dough is puffed, golden brown, and fully baked.

4. Add the flavorful finishing touch.

Stir melted butter, garlic powder, Parmesan, and optional parsley together. Lightly brush over the hot mummies, avoiding the face openings. Add two tiny dots of mustard or ketchup for eyes.

5. Make the dipping sauce.

Mix mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, honey, and smoked paprika until smooth. Serve alongside the warm mini mummy hot dogs.

My favorite little trick: Use a zip-top bag with one tiny corner snipped off to pipe perfect little mustard eyes. It's easier than using the mustard bottle, especially when making a whole tray! I made the mistake of trying to make the eyes straight out of the bottle and it was a disaster!

Fun variations: Try pepper jack for a spicy mummy, mozzarella for a gooey cheese filling, or everything bagel seasoning over the pastry before baking. You can also leave out the cheese for a classic version.

⭐️ Becky's Top Tips:

Keep the crescent dough cold. Warm dough becomes sticky and harder to wrap. If needed, refrigerate the dough strips for 5–10 minutes.

Don't wrap too tightly. Leave a few gaps between the strips so they look like real mummy bandages and bake evenly.

Pat the sausages dry. Removing moisture helps the dough stay in place instead of slipping off.

Use less cheese than you think. Thin strips are all you need. Too much cheese may ooze out during baking.

Add the eyes after baking. Mustard or ketchup eyes look much neater when applied after the mummies come out of the oven.

Storage, Freezing, and Make-Ahead Tips:

Refrigerator: Store cooled mummy hot dogs in an airtight container for up to 3–4 days.

Freezer: Freeze fully baked and cooled mummies on a baking sheet, then transfer to a freezer-safe container for up to 2 months for best quality.

Make ahead: Assemble the mummies up to 24 hours in advance. Cover and refrigerate, then bake just before serving.

Reheating: Warm refrigerated mummies in a 350°F oven for approximately 8–10 minutes, or until heated through. Frozen mummies will need additional time. Reheat until the centers reach 165°F.

Air fryer: Cook a small batch at 350°F for approximately 7–10 minutes, checking that the pastry is fully cooked. Timing will vary by air fryer.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Can I use regular-sized hot dogs?

Absolutely! Cut regular hot dogs in half or thirds to make mini mummies. Adjust the number of hot dogs based on your preferred size.

Can I use puff pastry instead of crescent rolls?

Yes. Puff pastry will produce a crispier, flakier mummy. Follow the pastry package's baking guidance and bake until golden and thoroughly cooked.

Why is my crescent dough soggy underneath?

This usually happens when sausages are wet or the dough is wrapped too thickly. Dry the sausages thoroughly, use thin dough strips, and avoid overcrowding the baking sheet.
