There are just some recipes that instantly bring back the best summer memories, and this creamy Green Onion Dip is one of them. Last summer, my family and I traveled to Pennsylvania to visit relatives, and at my uncle's pool party my Aunt Peg served a homemade green onion dip that everyone couldn't stop snacking on. Between the kids swimming, family catching up, and everyone reaching for another chip, the bowl disappeared in no time! I knew I had to recreate it when we got home, and this easy homemade green onion dip has been a favorite for cookouts, game days, holiday gatherings, and family get-togethers ever since.

Storage Tips:

Avoid Freezing: This dip doesn't freeze well since the dairy ingredients can separate and become grainy after thawing.

Refrigerate: Store leftover green onion dip in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

Give It a Stir: If a little liquid separates after chilling, simply stir the dip before serving to restore its creamy texture.

Keep It Cold: If serving at a party or cookout, don't leave the dip at room temperature for more than 2 hours (or 1 hour if it's very hot outside).

Fresh Garnish: For the freshest presentation, sprinkle on a few freshly sliced green onions and parsley for a pretty pop of color just before serving.

Make-Ahead Tips:

Serve Chilled: Remove the dip from the refrigerator about 10–15 minutes before serving to soften slightly for easier dipping while still staying nice and cool.

Make It the Day Before: This dip is even better after it has chilled overnight, giving the flavors plenty of time to meld together.

Prep the Green Onions Early: Wash and slice the green onions up to 2 days ahead and store them in a sealed container in the refrigerator.

Double the Recipe: Hosting a crowd? This recipe doubles easily and can be made a day in advance, making party prep a breeze.

FAQs:

Can I make this dip without mayonnaise?

Yes! You can replace the mayonnaise with an equal amount of sour cream or plain Greek yogurt for a lighter, tangier dip. The texture will be slightly different but still creamy and delicious.

What's the best way to thin the dip if it's too thick?

If your dip is thicker than you'd like, stir in a tablespoon of milk, buttermilk, or additional sour cream until it reaches your desired consistency.

Can I use dried onions instead of fresh green onions?

Fresh green onions are what give this dip its signature flavor and texture. Dried onions or onion flakes won't provide the same fresh, crisp bite, so they're not recommended as a substitute.

Can I use this dip as a spread?

Absolutely! This dip is fantastic spread on sandwiches, burgers, wraps, bagels, or even as a topping for baked potatoes instead of sour cream.

What herbs pair well with green onion dip?

Fresh dill, chives, parsley, and even a little fresh thyme all pair beautifully with the green onion flavor. Feel free to stir in a tablespoon of your favorite fresh herb for a unique twist.

Can I make this recipe with low-fat ingredients?

Yes! Reduced-fat cream cheese, light sour cream, and light mayonnaise all work well. The dip may be a little less rich, but it will still have plenty of flavor.
